In critical and suffocating times - TPTG

The Ta Paida Tis Galarias (The Children of The Gallery) group report on the recent demonstrations in Athens against austerity measures, including the events leading to the tragic deaths of three bank workers and its implications for the movement of opposition. What follows is a report on the demo of the 5th of May and the one that followed the day after and some general thoughts on the critical situation the movement in Greece is in at the time being. Although in a period of acute fiscal terrorism escalating day after day with... [Lire la suite]

Austerity measures approved in Greece, protests continue

The new measures have been voted in the Greek Parliament yesterday by a majority of 172 votes out of a total 300, these including the votes of the ruling Socialist Party (PASOK) and the extreme-right party of junta nostalgic creeps, LAOS. The Conservative party, the Communist Party and the Radical Coalition of the Left voted against the measures. The procedure was not without surprises as 3 PASOK MPs cast a blank vote, leading to their expulsion from the Party. One of them a veteran Socialist politician and Olympic Games champion... #281 | Names of the dead announced; bank workers strike today in memory; police launch unprecedented attacks in Athens

Thursday, May 6, 2010 The names of the three bank workers who died in the Marfin bank branch that was set alight have been announced. They are Paraskeui Zoulia, 35; Aggeliki Papathanasopoulou, 32 and Epameinondas Tsakalis, 36. We are all very shocked and saddened by their tragic deaths and it is extremely hard to keep on reporting from here in Athens. However, the events unfolding are so crucial that it is important to do so. In brief: First of all, a short disclaimer. No anarchists would ever purposefully endanger other... [Lire la suite]

#280 | Statement by the Skaramanga squat in Athens regarding today’s events: The murderers “mourn” their victims

Thursday, May 6, 2010 The statement below was issued a few hours ago by the anarchist squat of Skaramanga and Patision in Athens. The murderers “mourn” their victims (Regarding today’s tragic death of 3 people) The enormous strike demonstration which took place today, 5th of May turned into a social outflow of rage. At least 200,000 people of all ages took to the streets (employees and unemployed, in the public and private sector, locals and migrants) attempting, over many hours and in consecutive waves, to surround and to... State terror in Exarcheia

In an orgy of collective punishment the Greek police unleashed a brutal attack on Exarcheia, after the end of yesterday's protest march, destroying shops and social centres, evacuating a squat at gunpoint and brutalising the locals. The police brutality seen on the streets of Exarcheia last evening after the end of the general strike protest march in Athens has been unprecedented and casts serious doubts on the nature of the present regime in Greece which is casting away its democratic veil to expose itself as what it really is:... #279 | An employee of the burnt bank speaks out on tonight’s tragic deaths in Athens – please spread

Wednesday, May 5, 2010 Tonight’s tragic deaths in Athens leave little space for comments – we are all very shocked and deeply saddened by the events. To those (on the “Occupied London” blog even) who speculate that the deaths might have been caused purposefully by anarchists, we can only reply the following: we do not take to the streets, we do not risk our freedom and our lives confronting the greek police in order to kill other people. Anarchists are not murderers, and no brainwashing attempted by Greek PM Papandreou, the... [Lire la suite]

War-Zone Athens: three people dead, many buildings burning as general strike march turns into a battle

Three people have suffocated to death as a result of a fire in Marfin Bank during ongoing battles between anti-measure protesters and police in Athens. The Athens protest march marking the zenith of the general strike called for the 5th of May was attended by an approximate 200,000 (20,000 which is the foreign broadcast number referring to the PAME march alone), although because of lack of media coverage due to the media participation in the general strike no concrete estimates can be made. After the PAME (Communist Party union)... [Lire la suite]

General strike paralyses Greece

Greece has been brought to a standstill as angry workers stage a general strike over planned austerity measures. All flights are grounded and no trains or ferries are running as transport workers join public sector staff who began a 48-hour strike on Tuesday. Thousands have taken part in rallies in Athens and police have clashed with some protesters outside parliament. Spending cuts and tax rises are planned in return for a 110bn euro (£95bn) rescue package for Greece's economy. Parliament is to vote on the measures by the end... [Lire la suite]

Athens May Day erupts in battles

Labour May the 1st has erupted in pitched battles in Athens with many arrests and two people seriously injured. Labour May the 1st (May Day) is a day for token trade union parades in greece, but the IMF related austerity measures that have cast their long shadow on the country made sure no one was expecting a peaceful demonstration today. Four different demos had been called in Athens, reflecting existing class and political differences. One by PAME, the Communist Party controlled trade union umbrella, gathered at Syntagma... A few words about the current situation in Greece

After the announcement of the new austerity measures on Wednesday 3rd of March (cut of the total income of the public sector workers  between 15%-30% and 5-10% for the income of the private sector workers, if one calculates the effect of all the measures together)  the main trade union of the public sector sector workers (ADEDY) declared strikes for the 5th of  March (part time strike) and for the 16th of March (all day strike). Also the PAME trade union which represents mostly workers of the private sector controlled... [Lire la suite]
